Review of GoPro Hero 6

I’m going to present my latest acquisition to you – the GoPro Hero 6 Black. Like all my reviews, I’m going to be honest and this is my personal opinion. I bought it for our Mexico travel and I used it in extreme conditions.  This included diving at the maximum range of 10m.  I also left it on the beach with very hot sun and exposed to a lot of dust.

Very nice packaging with a good view of the GoPro Hero 6 Black. Inside the box you will find:

  • One GoPro Hero 6 Black.
  • One Frame for Hero 6 to be able to fix to accessories.
  • One Rechargeable battery.
  • Curved Adhesive Mount.
  • Adhesive Mount Mounting Buckle.
  • USB-C Cable.

It is an expensive action camera and I would like to find more stuff inside for the price.

Features

Stunning 4K video and 12MP photos in Single, Burst and Time Lapse modes.

4K60 and 1080P240 video enable stunning slow-motion playback.

With its all-new GP1 chip, GoPro Hero 6 Black delivers 2X the performance of the Hero 5.

You don’t need special case to dive to 33ft (10m).

It has a 2-inch touchscreen on the back for reviewing video and photos and adjusting settings. Very small for my fingers but it works well.

Improved stabilisation image.

Voice control, not a great success for me (maybe because i’m French!).

RAW photos provide the most flexibility when using advanced photo editing software. HDR Photo mode captures added details in the shadows and highlights of a scene.

Fine-tune exposure settings with simple on-screen Exposure Control.

Advanced audio processing captures left and right stereo audio channels.

QuikStories. Get the shot then kick back as your footage
moves to the GoPro app and transforms into an
awesome video automatically.

Captures your speed, GPS path, elevation gain and more. QuikStories uses this info to optimize your videos and lets you add a speedometer overlay.

For and Against

The new GoPro Hero 6 Black is exactly the same outside as the GoPro Hero 5. Same layout for the buttons and the 2 screens. The big difference is inside. Now you are able to record at 4K60 frames / second and 1080 240 frames / second. These 2 mode aren’t compatible with all computers because they use a new compression file. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) – also known as H.265. This video compression standard allows GoPro to capture large video content,  at roughly half the file size with equivalent image quality. Adoption for this new standard is increasing, and is natively supported on Android™ 5.0+ and iOS™ 11 on newer phones and tablets with more powerful processors. Moreover, HEVC is natively supported on Windows® 10 and MacOS® High Sierra on newer desktop computers with more powerful processors. When utilizing an HEVC video setting, a warning message will appear on the camera giving you a heads up that your phone or computer need to be HEVC compatible for playback and editing. If your computer isn’t compatible, don’t panic, you can convert it to H.264 codec by using Hanbrake, a free open source application.

The GoPro Hero 6 Black has an improved new stabilisation. I tested it and it worked very well. I rode a bike and my GoPro Hero 6 was mounted on a selfie stick.  We rode along the beach with no flat surface and the result was very impressive.

GoPro Hero 6 Stabilisation and examples

GoPro Hero 6 Black has an improved wifi transfer speed. I really enjoyed using the QuikStories app. From your daily shouts. this app creates awesome video in 2 or 3 clicks and you can publish it on your favourite media with one click. Very good when you want to share your day with Facebook friends. Of course, you haven’t complete control and you need to stick to the template you choose but it works for us.

For

Very good video quality (4K60fps).

Like the other GoPros, it’s very small and easy to take with you when you travel.

Very good Stabilisation.

Easy to use. You can configure a lot of things from the menu. I never tried to change it, the default worked perfectly for my travel use.

You can take it everywhere without any other accessories. I mean you can start filming on the beach and go inside the water without worries.

For my point of view, it is the ideal companion for travellers.

Against

The voice recognition didn’t work with me (maybe because I’m French with a strong accent!).

The battery life is too short.

In the sun, the front screen became black.

Can’t add microphone.

The price should be little bit less.

My Verdict

The GoPro Hero 6 Black is an excellent action camera and complements your DSLR to make your videos more dynamic. But it can stand alone and do all your travel videos.  You need a big memory card and an extra battery. You can use the 3 different recording angles to create dynamic videos. I loved waking up in the early morning to do a sunrise time lapse. Just one click and wait. The GoPro Hero 6 is so good and very easy to carry.  I would recommend it to all travellers – extreme or not. For me, it is more than an action camera. The quality of photographs is very impressive as well considering the size and the weight of the GoPro Hero 6.
